How to build a PPE kit

PPE Kit

As a business manager or owner you’ve probably come to realize that you need to assemble a PPE kit. That is a personal protective equipment kit to equip your employees, protect your customers, and enable your business operations during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Beyond the current crisis, a PPE kit is going to become critical for businesses to mitigate against future pathogens. After all, we have seen the rise of threats like H1N1, Zikavirus, SARS, Ebola, and of course the novel coronavirus.

What is PPE?

Let’s first define what the meaning of PPE is. PPE is an acronym that when spelled out means Personal Protective Equipment. It is equipment that an individual uses or wears to protect themselves and those around them from injury or infection. PPE is designed to protect people from physical risks, airborne contaminants, chemicals, heat, and other hazards that can pose a safety threat. It does this by creating a barrier between the wearer and its environment. However, the barrier should not hinder the wearer’s ability to perform a task or job effectively or this will cause additional safety risks.

We have come to know PPE used for protection against the spread of the coronavirus, but more generically a PPE kit has a broader function to protect.

PPE can be worn in a variety of settings. It is often worn in compliance with workplace safety and health regulations, but can also be worn in sports, for disease control, personal use and more.

Hazards differ from workplace to workplace as do the PPE needs. This can make it difficult to determine what would be the most useful and effective PPE  for your company. This article will discuss the basic contents of a PPE kit and different types of kits.

So how to assemble one? Here is a breakdown of a PPE kit for various business scenarios.

What is in a Basic PPE Kit?

A basic PPE kit should include:

This basic kit provides reusable face masks that can be assigned to employees, and that can be washed for repeat use.

A standard kit includes disposable masks so that you can offer a mask to as customers or visitors to your premises (as needed and mandated), or to those that need protection but may not have their own mask.

A supply hand sanitizer with a hand sanitizer holder or dispenser can be set up at doors and access points to the building.

Most businesses will also already have cleaning supplies, but it is important to have an amply supply of commercial disinfectants that will kill most pathogens on contact. For a list of disinfectants as specified by the EPA that will kill coronavirus, see this link.

Retail PPE Kit Contents

In a retail environment, where there is customer flow in and out of a facility, the basic kit is a good start, however, you’ll want to add mobile cleaning carts or baskets to allow frequent wipe down of high touch areas. It also adds sanitary wipes for point of purchase devices, as well as plexiglass screens for cashier protection.

It should also include one or more disinfectant foggers (look for an ulv fogger machine), which are portable disinfectant sprayers that can aerosolize fine particles of disinfectant for spraying along retail aisles, shelving, and display cases as well as lobbies or entryways and exits.

Retail PPE kits can be used for a variety of physical locations that can include:

  • Retail stores
  • Hair salons and barbers
  • Bars and restaurants
  • Churches, synagogues and mosques
  • Gyms and yoga studios
  • Schools, daycares and preschools
  • Medical offices
  • Dental offices (note that PPE kits for dental offices will need additional barrier equipment and staff garments)

A retail PPE kit might might look like this:

  • Disposable 3-ply face masks
  • Reusable face masks for staff
  • Hand sanitizer and dispenser
  • Disposable rubber gloves
  • Sanitary alcohol wipes
  • Public portable wash station
  • Face shields
  • Plexiglass screens for point of purchase
  • Signage for suggested customer traffic flow (floor and ceiling mounted)
  • Cleaning kits that include:
    • Soap
    • Mop and bucket
    • Liquid disinfectant
    • Sanitary wipes
    • Spray disinfectant
    • Paper towels
    • Cleaning carts or baskets.
  • Disinfectant fogger
  • Non-contact thermometer(s)

Operational PPE Kit For Day to Day Business

Operational PPE kits can be used for businesses that may not welcome many walk-in visitors or pedestrian customers, but have workers in closer proximity, where social distancing may not be easy or reliably enforceable or enacted.

You can use the retail PPE kit, however it can be modified for less foot traffic. Mobile cleaning kits may not be as frequently need with fewer visitors and just a fixed number of workers.

Some PPE products that may not be required for your operational kit, might include

Safety googles: These eye shields are useful for full eye protection from chemicals as well as disease pathogens.
Bodysuits – These garments give full body protection
UV light boxes – Ultraviolet light boxes can be used to sanitizer small items like phones, tablets, bar code scanners and other small electronics used in a business environment.

Does My Business Need Multiple PPE Kits?

If you have several locations for your business, then each premise may need a different PPE kit. You can prepare all the kits based on user profile. So for example, if one location is a non-public office, while another location welcomes walk-ins from the street then the PPE kits you would build might look quite from your standard kit.

Some companies may also build personal PPE kits for their staff, especially if the employee is working from home. A home-based worker may need a supply of occasional use masks. If they access public facilities then you might expand that their kits to include alcohol wipes and a personal hand sanitizer.

Some companies are keeping a central inventory of PPE products to create whatever kits are needed and to replenish them as the consumables are depleted, very similar to how office supplies are handled at the company..

Disposible Face Mask vs Reusable Mask

One decision you might need to make is whether to put a disposable face mask supply (such as these 3 ply masks) in your PPE kit versus reusuable masks.

Disposable one time use masks are ideal for walk ins, customer visits and suppliers on-site that show up without a mask, while masks are still mandated.

Reusable masks can be kept in stock to issue to new employees or to replace lost or damage reusable masks used by staff. These masks are washable, but are designed to be issued to one user and not reused among different people.

Ideally you would keep a supply of both on hand in your company’s PPE kit.
